On this itinerary on the Merlijn, we embarked in Cologne in the evening and cruised a little further down the Rhine to anchor for the night. In the morning, we continued cruising to Bonn, where we disembarked and started the cycling journey to the Moselle.

Cycling from Bonn to Koblenz along the picturesque Rhine River is a breathtaking journey that perfectly blends natural beauty and historical charm. As you embark on this scenic route, you’ll be treated to sweeping vistas of the meandering Rhine, flanked by lush vineyards, quaint villages, and the occasional medieval castle perched atop verdant hills.

The serene waters of the Rhine accompany you throughout the journey, providing a tranquil backdrop as you pedal along its banks. On a cycling and cruising holiday, your ship will continue cruising to Koblenz en route to the Moselle while you explore the charming villages along the river.

As you approach Koblenz, the confluence of the Rhine, Koblenz, and Moselle rivers, you’ll be rewarded with the sight of the iconic Deutsches Eck (German Corner) and the imposing Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Cycling from Bonn to Koblenz along the Rhine is a remarkable adventure that promises both physical satisfaction and cultural enrichment.

Cycling and Cruising the Moselle: Koblenz to Trier

From Koblenz to Trier, cycling the Moselle is a treat for nature lovers and history buffs. This section of the river boasts a well-maintained network of cycling paths that follow the river’s course, offering breathtaking vistas of lush vineyards, serene forests, and the meandering river itself.

Whether you start your cycling adventure in the historic city of Koblenz or find yourself there in the middle of the day, take the cable car up to the top of the hill. The views of the convergence of the Rhine, Koblenz, and Moselle Rivers are magnificent!

While your ship cruises the Moselle over the next few days, you’ll pedal your way through picturesque villages like CochemZell, and Traben-Trarbach, each with its own unique charm and history. Wine and Dine Along the Moselle

One of the Moselle’s most famous exports is its wine, and cycling and cruising the Moselle means you’ll have plenty of opportunities to savor the local produce. The vineyards that blanket the hillsides in this region are known for their white wines, particularly the crisp and fruity Moselle Rieslings. Stop by local wineries and cellars for tastings or enjoy a leisurely lunch with a view at one of the many riverside restaurants.

Traben-Trarbach hosts one of the more interesting wineries, the Winery of Storck. On our cycling and cruising tour on the Moselle, we anchored in this lovely town and were shown the ultimate hospitality by Peter Storck, one of the owners. Being such a small group (only 24 passengers), Peter came aboard our ship, provided us with the winery’s history, and guided us to the first of three wine tastings of the evening.

The first tasting occurred in a series of vaults under the abutments of an old stone bridge. The second tasting occurred in a three-story cellar dating back to the fourteenth century that initially stored salt and powder magazines. The final tasting took place in the current winery located centrally in the town.

Historical Stops and Cultural Immersion

As you embark on a Moselle cycling holiday, you’ll encounter a rich tapestry of history and culture. Don’t miss the chance to explore the ancient town of Trier, with its stunning Roman architecture, including the famous Porta Nigra and the Trier Cathedral.

Porta Nigra, one of Trier’s most iconic landmarks, is a remarkably well-preserved Roman city gate dating back to the 2nd century AD. This imposing structure is a testament to Trier’s status as a significant Roman settlement, with its massive sandstone blocks and intricate design serving as a vivid reminder of the city’s historical significance.

The Trier Cathedral, or the Cathedral of Saint Peter, is another architectural gem showcasing the city’s rich history. Built on the foundations of a Roman palace, this cathedral represents a harmonious blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles, making it an architectural masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

If your cruising itinerary permits, plan your trip around one of the many local festivals celebrating the Moselle’s heritage. The wine festivals in the charming towns along the river during the harvest season are a delightful way to experience the region’s traditions and cuisine.

Challenges and Rewards of Cycling and Cruising the Moselle

The gentle slopes of the vineyard-covered hills are a delight to pedal through, while the occasional steep ascent provides a satisfying challenge for those seeking an adrenaline rush. Those who choose this dual adventure on the Moselle will have no doubt realized that if the ship travels on the river, you have a choice if you want to cycle or cruise for the day. Before embarking on your dual adventure on the Moselle, here are some practical tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey:

  • Pack Wisely: When cycling, pack essentials like comfortable clothing, padded shorts, gloves, and a water bottle. Your bike and boat tour company will probably supply a good helmet and a bike repair kit. For avid cyclists, you can inquire if you wish to bring your own bike or pedals.

  • Plan Ahead: Research the towns and attractions you want to visit to maximize your time. Your tour guide may make some suggestions, but you may have limited time to research to get the best results.
  • Book in Advance: Both cycling tours and river cruises can fill up quickly, so book well in advance, especially if you have specific dates or itineraries. Many bike and boat tour companies offer a very limited of cabins. For example, only 12 cabins aboard the Merlijn.

Learn Basic Phrases: While many locals in the Moselle region speak English, learning a few basic phrases in German can go a long way in enhancing your experience.
