Why it was one of my favorites places to stay in Scotland.

In the fall of 2024, my husband and I planned a trip to Scotland. We wanted accommodation that was both interesting and easy on the wallet. We also wanted to be near the attractions of each location and hoped for a taste of genuine Scottish hospitality. The Old Rectory Inn in Callander fit all these requirements and more.

Where is Callander?

Callander is a picturesque town located in central Scotland, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Highlands.” It sits on the edge of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, an area renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, outdoor activities, and historical landmarks. Callander itself is a charming town with a variety of local shops, restaurants, and cafes, making it a great destination for anyone who enjoys exploring Scotland’s more tranquil, rural side.

How to Get to Callander?

Getting to Callander is fairly straightforward, whether you’re arriving by car, train, or bus. If you’re driving, it’s about an hour’s drive north from Glasgow (around 40 miles), making it an easily accessible destination for both locals and tourists. There are also regular train services to Callander from Glasgow, followed by a short bus ride from the station to the town center.

On our visit, we drove in from Stirling, about a 25 minute drive on highway A84. From Edinburgh, it is just over an hours drive (84km).

The Old Rectory Inn: A Hidden Gem

The Old Rectory Inn is a true gem in Callander, offering a delightful blend of comfort and Scottish hospitality. It is a traditional 5-bedroom B&B, located just a short walk from the town center. The inn is housed in a charming, historic building with a rich character that adds to the quaint ambiance. It’s a place where you feel right at home from the moment you step through the door.

What makes The Old Rectory Inn truly special is not just its cozy atmosphere but the way it makes you feel like part of the family. The owners and staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, going out of their way to make sure that every guest feels comfortable. They refer to their guests as “residents,” which makes the experience feel more like staying with close friends than at a hotel. It’s these little touches that make the Old Rectory Inn stand out from other accommodations.

On our stay we had a somewhat humorous experience as well. Like many Scottish inns, the floors and stairs are carpeted with tartan and plaid patterns. When we arrived and looked at the staircase in front of us, we realized that my husband was wearing a tartan shirt in the same pattern as the carpet on the stairs. Talk about camouflage!

Things to Do While Staying at The Old Rectory Inn

While The Old Rectory Inn is a wonderful place to relax, it also serves as the perfect base for exploring Callander and the surrounding areas. Here are a few things you can do while staying here:

Explore the Natural Beauty of the Trossachs

Callander is right in the heart of the Trossachs, a region famed for its scenic beauty. Whether you love hiking, cycling, or simply enjoying nature, there’s something for everyone. A great place to start is Loch Katrine, where you can take a boat cruise or enjoy a peaceful walk along the shores. There are also several scenic trails in the area, including the famous Rob Roy Way, which passes through the town.

Visit Stirling Castle and Wallace Monument

Just a short drive away from Callander is Stirling, a historic town with plenty to explore. Stirling Castle is a must-visit, offering stunning views over the surrounding countryside and a glimpse into Scotland’s fascinating history. While in Stirling, be sure to visit the Wallace Monument, dedicated to the legendary William Wallace, the Scottish hero immortalized in the film Braveheart.

Doune Castle

Between Stirling and Callander lies Doune Castle which, if you are an Outlander fan, you would know it as Castle Leoch. Its a lovely example of a 14thcentury castle. Today, it is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and offers an immersive experience where you can roam through the corridors or climb the towers with a self-guided audio tour.

Discover Local History and Heritage

Callander itself is a town with a rich history. You can explore its heritage at the Callander Heritage Museum, which showcases the town’s past, including its role in the development of tourism in the 19th century. The town also boasts several historic buildings and charming streets to wander through.

Although there are several walking trails starting in Callander, there is also a historic walking tour that remains within the town limits. This is a perfect way to explore the town before dinner or in the evening before sunset.

Outdoor Activities

The area around Callander is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking and cycling to kayaking and fishing, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities. If you’re up for a more challenging hike, the nearby Ben Ledi offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and lochs.

A Cozy, Comfortable Stay

When you return to The Old Rectory Inn after a day of adventure, you’ll be greeted with warmth and comfort. The beds are incredibly comfortable, ensuring a restful night’s sleep, and the cozy rooms are perfect for unwinding. The breakfast is hearty and delicious, and the owners make sure to accommodate any dietary needs or preferences.

Near the main entrance, there is a small lounge with a couple hundred of whiskeys shelved on the upper walls begging to be opened and tasted. On our visit, we were on our third wee dram before they asked for any payment. It was a nice, personal touch.

Located further inside the inn, is a small restaurant open to the public. In the summer, an outside terrace offers beer and pub fare for anyone walking by. Throughout the week, several nights serve a set menu.

One of the highlights of my stay was the steak dinner on Saturday night followed by local entertainment. The live music added a lovely touch, creating a lively yet intimate atmosphere that made the evening unforgettable. As the evening progressed, we experienced great conversation from fellow “residents.”
