Boca de Cena restaurant features delectable Seafood, Mediterranean, and Portuguese dishes and is located within the historic district.

On Sao Miguel, there are two wineries: Quinta da Jardinete, located on the north shore of the island, and Adega Vitivinícola Lucas Lopes Amaral, situated on the southern tip of the island.

One does not have to go far for fine dining restaurants in Ponta Delgada. Gourmet Azorean Dishes can be found at Anfiteatro Restaurant, which offers inventive takes on traditional Azorean dishes. Try the rabbit with pineapple and sweet potato or the Azorean-style octopus.
For the meat-lover, indulge in delicious grilled meats at the Cais 20 Restaurant, which specializes in the famous Azorean beef and pork. The cozy atmosphere, seaside location, and friendly staff make it a must-visit.
Ponta Delgada Restaurants and Bars in the Old Town
Within the historical center of Ponta Delgada, there is plenty of restaurants that offer everything from simple American-style burgers to fine dining with seafood, Mediterranean and Portuguese dishes, and traditional Azorean cuisine. Whatever your taste for food is, you will find something to please the palate daily.
Here are some of my favorite restaurants and bars in Ponta Delgada:
- A Tasca
Serving classic Azorean dishes in a cozy, casual atmosphere, A Tasca is considered by many to be one of the best places to eat on the island.
You can go right with a meat and cheese tasting board, and you’ve GOT to try the pineapple cake for dessert. A word of warning, though, A Tasca doesn’t take reservations, and I’ve seen the line wrap around the block to get a table. Make sure to go early, and don’t save this for the last night in case it’s too crowded.
- Louvre Michaelense
Louvre Michaelense is a fine dining establishment in the heart of Ponta Delgada that provides a superb gastronomic experience. The restaurant serves worldwide cuisine, emphasizing fresh, locally produced ingredients. The warm and inviting environment, with a beautiful interior design, pays homage to the Azores’ history and culture. Prices are affordable, given the high quality of the cuisine and service.
During the day, Louvre Michaelense is a cafe and bistro known for its chocolate cake, brunch, tea, and coffee. It’s beautifully decorated with indoor and outdoor seating in the old town, so you can enjoy a delicious meal while watching the city pass by.
It serves exciting cocktails in the evening and has an extensive wine list. I recommend the ravioli.
- Casa Nostra Açores
Casa Nostra Açores is a wonderful dining establishment with a touch of flair. It focuses on Mediterranean and Portuguese cuisine made from locally sourced ingredients, offers tapas-style menu items, and selects 4-course tasting menus.
The intriguing part of this restaurant is that it has an open-style kitchen where the kitchen is in the center of the restaurant, thereby allowing you to watch the chefs create their masterpieces. The combination of tastes and the effort they put into the idea and presentation of every single plate is a delight for the eye and tastebuds.
Having eaten there twice during my one-week stay, the higher price is worth the artistry. I recommend carrot soup and pear cheesecake. If you only had one restaurant to choose from in Ponta Delgada, THIS would be the place!
- Ta Gente
Ta Gente, a must-visit establishment in the evening, is more of a quirky upscale tapas and cocktail bar than a restaurant. Located on the north end of the Ponta Delgada’s historical district, this trendy upscale cocktail bar is the perfect way to end an evening. With plenty of outdoor seating, you can enjoy creative cocktails while people-watching on the narrow cobblestone street.
A limited menu offers traditional Portuguese foods and flavors with a balance of modern international plates. Specialty cocktails with unique designs and flair are the reason to spend some time here. Watch the bartenders create their works of art while you indulge in a sharing platter of local cheeses, jams, and sausages.
- Café Royale
One of the more casual restaurants in Ponta Delgada is the Café Royale. Situated just off the main waterfront boulevard and next to the Police Station, this small establishment serves everything from American-style hamburgers to classic Azorean dishes such as lapas grelhadas (grilled lapas), São Jorge cheese, morcela (blood sausage) and bifana (pork sandwich).
If you are looking for a hidden gem that is not too pretentious, this is the place to go. For a quick bite, I recommend the burger and fries. Simple, yet satisfying.
Guided Food Experiences in Ponta Delgada
One of the best things to do when arriving in a new destination is to participate in a food tour or ford and wine experience. By doing so, you will get an overview of some of the most popular and most recommended experiences in that location. Ponta Delgada is no exception!
During my one week visit to Sau Miguel, I chose a food and Wine Walking Tour offered by Hungry Whale Experiences on the first day. This permitted me to not only get the lay of the land on the first evening but also showed me some of the best restaurants in Ponta Delgada. It was a small group tour with 10 people that took us to 2 restaurants, one bar and a local wine store which showcased the local wines of the region.
Later in my stay, I chose to have a food and wine experience. This was a little more intimate with only three people and took place in the kitchen of an “AirBnB” which is owned by the owner of Hungry Whale Tour.
If you have the time, both of these tours are fabulous!

Oh wow! My mouth is watering and I could happily go to any of these eateries and enjoy. The seafood sounds amazing but there again, I’m not sure I could walk past the slow-cooked beef or the stew cooked in the earth! I would definitely be up for a walking tour.
