Overview of Ponta Delgada
As part of the Azores Archipelago, São Miguel Island, with its largest city of Ponta Delgada, is renowned as one of the world’s top destinations for whale watching. The island, which sits atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is about 1500 km off the coast of Portugal and is a prime location where cold and warm ocean currents meet. This creates a nutrient-rich environment that attracts an abundance of marine life, including whales who make their way through the Azores during their migratory routes. This offers visitors a chance to witness their majestic presence up close.

Seasonality of Whale Watching
The best time to watch whales in Ponta Delgada is from April to October. During this period, you’ll have a higher chance of spotting these beautiful creatures gliding through the crystalline waters. When planning your whale-watching excursion in Ponta Delgada, consider the seasonality of these magnificent creatures.
From April to October, you’ll have the best chance of spotting them in the waters around Vila Franca do Campo and the Nordeste coast. With a variety of tour options available, you can customize your experience to suit your interests and preferences. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely boat ride or a more adventurous excursion, there’s a tour for everyone.
Specific Locations for Whale Watching in Ponta Delgada
The most popular locations for whale watching in Ponta Delgada are the waters around Vila Franca do Campo’s volcanic islets and the Nordeste coast. Here, you’ll find a high concentration of marine life, including dolphins, pilot whales, sperm whales, and humpback whales.
During my whale-watching trip from Ponta Delgada, I experienced the adventure in a zodiac watercraft. For reference, the voyage from Ponta Delgada to the east of Vila Franca do Campo takes almost 75 to 90 minutes. Depending on the wind and sea conditions, this can be a pleasant or nerve-wracking rough ride. In January, in a zodiac, this was QUITE the experience as the seas were rough. At other times of the year or on the north coast, the experience may be different.
Whale Watching Tour Options
Types of Tours Available

You can choose between catamarans, zodiac boats, or sailboats. Whether you’re a seasoned whale watcher or a first-timer, choosing a tour that fits your needs is important. If you’re looking for a more intimate experience, a smaller boat like a zodiac may be the way to go. A catamaran or sailboat may be a better option for those who want a more leisurely trip. Regardless of your choice, be sure to book with a reputable tour operator to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

What to Expect on a Whale-Watching Tour
Boat Safety and Regulations
As you arrive at your tour starting point in the marina area, the tour staff will register you and ask you to sign a liability waiver. You are, after all, embarking on an adventure into the ocean which has the potential to be unforgiving, and you are knowingly approaching very large wild animals in their natural habitat. Even with all safety precautions, wildlife is unpredictable. You will also need to stow any backpacks, purses, or other loose items in the provided lockers, as the boats have no room.
Before boarding the boat, the crew will explain safety regulations and equip you with a life jacket. You will have the option of wearing full waterproof pants and a jacket as well. I highly recommend this during the winter months as the Atlantic Ocean is very cold.
Once everyone is fully equipped, the tour leader will guide you to the boat and start the boarding procedure. If a zodiac is used, there are approximately 15-20 people on the tour. The guide will allocate the people to get the best weight distribution for the watercraft. After everyone is seated, the guide, usually a biologist, will introduce the boat’s captain, outline any additional safety features or restrictions, and then head out to sea.
As you leave Ponta Delgada for your whale-watching tour, please sit back, and relax as the crew takes you on a journey to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. As you sail through the Atlantic Ocean, keep your eyes peeled for whale and dolphin sightings. If sighted, the boats will maintain a safe distance from the whales to ensure their safety and respect their natural habitat. Remember to have your camera ready, as these animals quickly disappear!
Getting To the Whale Watching Location
As mentioned previously, the whale-watching tours from Ponta Delgada usually head towards Vila Franca do Campo, a submerged extinct volcanic area where abundant seal life is common. Depending on the currents, wind, and wave conditions, this trip can be as short as 60 minutes with smooth seas or as long as 75 to 90 minutes with rougher seas or against the current. If you are (un)-fortunate to be in a zodiac with rough seas and against the current, you will be in for a WILD ride.
The small watercraft will navigate the ocean swells and position itself, so it is perpendicular to the waves. As it goes up the swell of the wave, it is not uncommon for it to be out of the water for a short time on the backside of the wave. As exciting as this sounds, the zodiac then comes crashing back to the water with a loud and heavy thud. It feels like both a roller coaster and a “drop-zone” ride at the same time.
Note: If you are prone to seasickness, take medication before embarking on this experience.
Common Whale Sightings in Ponta Delgada
During your whale-watching tour from Ponta Delgada, you will have the opportunity to witness different species of whales, including the sperm, humpback, orca, and blue whale, in their natural habitat. The sight of a humpback whale breaching the surface is truly awe-inspiring! Moreover, it is also common to see a pod of dolphins swimming alongside your boat, as they are frequent visitors and playful companions during the tour.
Imagine the thrill of being on a boat, surrounded by the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean, eagerly anticipating your first encounter with a magnificent whale. As you sail through the azure waters, the excitement builds as you catch glimpses of their blows and tails breaking the surface. Then, in a heartbeat, you witness the awe-inspiring sight of these gentle giants gracefully emerging from the depths, their massive bodies breaching the water. The sense of wonder and admiration is truly indescribable.
Tips for a Successful Whale-Watching Experience
Whale watching in Ponta Delgada is an unforgettable experience, but here are a few tips to help you make the most of it. Here are some things to keep in mind:
What to Bring on the Tour
As you get ready for your whale-watching tour, there are a few things you should consider wearing or bringing along. Remember to wear sunscreen, a hat that will stay on your head, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s glare on the water. Also, consider bringing a camera or binoculars to examine the whales closely. Keep in mind that these items need to be well secured and protected from any water that may splash into the boat.
As many North Americans are prone to carrying a water bottle wherever they go, this is not a consideration on this type of adventure as you will not be able to hold onto it. Additionally, any snacks are frowned upon for the same reason. Full-day trips on larger boats may have other arrangements, but on a zodiac, you must stow loose items and backpacks before embarking on the watercraft.
Following these tips will prepare you for an unforgettable whale-watching experience.
How to Dress Appropriately
Before embarking on your whale-watching adventure, preparing yourself for the elements is essential. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes and clothes that are easy to move around. Please dress in layers, as it can get chilly out on the water. And remember to bring a waterproof jacket or poncho, just in case. If you do not have these with you, the tour operator should have some available for you.
Depending on the type of watercraft and the movement of the seas, you may encounter water splashing into the boat. As mentioned, I experienced this trip on a rough day, and by the end of the tour, there was about 10 cm (3 inches) of water at the bottom of the zodiac. (It is pretty cold. If you plan on doing this whale-watching tour at the beginning of your stay in Ponta Delgada, remember that your shoes may be wet when you finish, so be sure to have alternate footwear for the remainder of your vacation.
